How to Choose Outfits That Make Your Family Photos Feel Effortless

One of the questions I’m asked most often is, “What should we wear for our family photos?” And honestly, I get it. Choosing outfits for everyone can feel like a lot. But it doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, it can be simple, fun, and even meaningful when you think about it in a new way.
Instead of focusing on rules, I want to share how I help families choose outfits that feel effortless, natural, and true‑to‑life, the kind of outfits that make your photos feel warm, connected, and beautifully you.
🌿 Start With One Person - Then Build Around Them
Here’s a little secret: the easiest way to plan outfits is to start with one person and build around them. Usually, that’s mom, because her outfit often sets the tone for the whole session.
Maybe it’s a soft, flowy dress you already love. Maybe it’s a cozy sweater that makes you feel confident. Maybe it’s a color that feels gentle and calming.
Once you choose your outfit, everything else becomes simple.
🌸 Choose Colors That Feel Like Your Family
Instead of thinking about “photo colors,” think about your family’s personality.
Soft and cozy? Try creams, warm browns, and muted florals.
Bright and cheerful? Go for soft pinks, sage, or light blue.
Nature‑loving and outdoorsy? Earthy neutrals always photograph beautifully.
The goal is harmony - not matchy matchy. When your colors feel like you, your photos will too.
🌼 Think About Movement, Not Just Style
Family sessions aren’t stiff or posed - they’re full of movement, snuggles, walking, spinning, and play. So choose outfits that move with you.
Flowy dresses create beautiful motion. Soft fabrics photograph gently. Comfortable clothing helps everyone relax.
If your kids can run, jump, and be themselves, your photos will feel natural and joyful.
🌿 Let Your Kids’ Personalities Shine
Kids don’t need fancy outfits to look beautiful in photos. They just need to feel comfortable and free.
Some sweet options:
Simple rompers
Soft sweaters
Neutral overalls
Cozy dresses
Barefoot for toddlers (my favorite)
When kids feel comfortable, their personalities shine - and that’s what makes your photos magical.
🌸 Avoid Anything That Competes With Your Connection
Your family’s connection is the heart of your photos. So avoid anything that pulls attention away from your faces:
Neon colors
Busy patterns
Large logos
Harsh blacks
Distracting shoes
Soft, simple pieces always photograph best.
🌼 A Real Example From a Session
One of my favorite families chose outfits that were so simple but so perfect.
Mama wore a soft cream t-shirt and jeans. Dad wore a simple blue stripped shirt. Their son wore an orange stripped shirt. Their daughter wore a floral patterened dress!
That’s it. 4 matching pieces. Soft colors. And the photos were absolutely beautiful.
Not because the outfits were fancy - but because they felt natural, gentle, and true to who they are.

🌿 Your Outfits Should Feel Like Home
At the end of the day, your outfits should feel like you. Not Pinterest. Not a trend. Not a rule.
Just your family - comfortable, connected, and present.
If you feel beautiful, it will show in every single photo.
💛 A Gentle Verse to Close
“Let all that you do be done in love.” — 1 Corinthians 16:14
A reminder that the sweetest photos come from the love you already share.
